We just wanted to let you know about the new field trips we have lined up for the Fall. We are excited to start off a new season with the club and look forward to seeing many of you out on some of our fall excursions and overnight trips. Here’s what we’ve got scheduled in so far, for the fall of 2018:
Sunday September 2nd – Victoria Classic Boat Festival
This will be an inter-club meetup with the Sequim Camera Club of Washington! Come and join us for a day of nautical themed photography starting at 10:30 am with the boat parade at Ogden point breakwater, followed by a stop for lunch at The Breakwater Cafe and Bistro at 12:15pm. After that, we will move to the Inner harbour to spend the afternoon photographing classic boats from all over the Pacific Northwest and various other attractions along the causeway and docks. This festival a 40 year long tradition celebrating our maritime heritage and attracts thousands of people to the Inner Harbour each year.
Saturday September 8th – Whiffin Spit: Night photography
This field trip will focus on night photography at Whiffin spit during the New Moon in September. This location is beautiful for capturing night and astro landscape shots, as well as panoramic shots of the Sooke harbour and basin. The milky way core is visible from about 9:30 – 11:30pm. All experience levels are welcome and we will be accompanied by local photographer Murray Sharratt who can give some pointers on night and astrophotography to those who are new to it. We may offer some light painting as an option for those who are interested.
October (date t.b.a.) – Mary Lake Sanctuary
The Mary Lake property is a 67 acre protected forest and riparian area with 7 different ecosystems, that supports biodiversity and wildlife habitat. Within the sanctuary you will find plenty to photograph, including Mary Lake, beautiful forested landscapes with sections of creek alongside the trails, beaver and skunk cabbage wetlands, a dam, pond and fish ladder and much more. If were lucky, we may see the first signs of fall colour happening. We are arranging a one hour ‘Spirit Walks’ guided tour of the sanctuary and members can self guide after that with maps. This event will be posted in the calendar soon.
October 20th – Goldstream Provincial Park Fall Colours
It’s that time of year when the deciduous trees in the park turn every shade of golden yellow and orange. Lots to see and photograph, including Big Leaf Maple, 600 year old Douglas Firs and Cedars, flowy sections of river, Niagara Falls, the Goldstream Estuary, Bald eagles and much more. Your group leader is Karl Schoepp.
October 12th-15 / October 19th- 22nd Tofino: Bears, Rain Forests and Winter Storms
This overnight trip is confirmed and we will stay at the EcoLodge at the Botanical Gardens in Tofino. We have fully booked all the Lodge rooms but still have the option of adding on the 3-room Botanical house for both weekends if there are others who would like to register. See the above attachment for more details and please contact Richard James to get on the wait list for this trip.
Please see the calendar for more details on all field trips and let us know if you have any further questions. As always, we are open to suggestions and anyone is welcome to lead a trip of their choosing, just get in touch with us at Field Trips and we will set it up.
