37th Annual
North Shore Photographic Challenge
SATURDAY MARCH 6, 2021
On Line – Keynote Speaker 4 PM (TBD), Evening Program 7 PM

Dear Fellow Photographers:

For the past 36 years the North Shore Photographic Society has been hosting the North Shore Photographic Challenge, an event attended by approximately 300 photographers, families and friends. Thirty photography clubs from British Columbia and the Yukon Territory regularly participate in this competition.

2021 Challenge format

Because COVID is still with us, we are planning an ON-LINE event this year! This will allow Challenge participants from across BC and the Yukon, as well as their fellow club members, family, and friends, to see the show, interact with sponsors demonstrating the latest gear, sign up for courses or CAPA, win door prizes, and vote in the People’s Choice competition (digital projections this year instead of prints).

In addition, for the first time ever, we are including a Keynote Speech in an afternoon session prior to the show. We are proud to announce Chris Harris as this year’s Keynote Speaker, on the topic of:
Artistic Expression: Your Photography as Art

Individual photographers as well as photography clubs can submit images to the 2021 North Shore Photographic Challenge. Club and individual entries will be randomly mixed in the Challenge competition.

Images will be evaluated by a panel of qualified judges. Challenge judges will score each image out of a maximum of 30 points.

Club Submissions

Each club will submit a maximum of 6 images. The club submissions must be received by February 12th, 2021.

Please see the Conditions of Entry and the Digital Specifications Guide included with this e-mail.

Further information will be sent to you including the entry form and club entry number once you have confirmed that your club is participating.

Individual Submissions

Images submitted by individuals must be received by February 12th, 2021. Each individual photographer may submit up to 3 images.

To enter, individual entrants will upload an image to the NSPS website at http://www.nsps.ca/challenge/ (entries open on December 6, 2020) and pay a non-refundable $15 entry fee through PayPal. Individuals may also purchase a cost-saving bundle that includes the entry fee and admission to the Challenge for only $20..

Note: there is no guarantee that an individual’s image will be included as a finalist in the Challenge competition.

Image rules

All images must be the original work of the entrant.

Any image entered in the North Shore Photographic Challenge in previous years is disqualified.

Individual entrants are not required to be CAPA members.

A photographer whose work is included in a club entry may also enter a different image as an individual

Location

Cyberspace.

Awards

The “North Shore Challenge Trophy” will be awarded to the photography club with the highest aggregate score of the 6 images submitted.

Two sets of CAPA medals will be awarded for single images: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize for images submitted by clubs, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize for images submitted by individuals.

The North Shore Photographic Society Gold Medal for Best of Show will be awarded to the highest scoring image among club and individual entries. If there is a point tie between the top individual and club images, judges will rule which one is Best In Show.

People’s Choice

Instead of in the lobby of the Kay Meek Theatre as in past years, a separate display of photographs from NSPS members will be shown in a Zoom breakout room. Audience members may vote for their favourite photograph. The “People’s Choice Award” will be presented to the winning photographer before the end of the evening.

Refreshments

As for any other on-line event, refreshments are BYO.

Tickets

Tickets to the show, including the special Keynote Address by CHRIS HARRIS – “Artistic Expression: Your Photography as Art” , cost just $10.00 (another advantage of taking it on-line).  Here is a link to a 4-minute preview of Chris talking about his subject.

Tickets may be purchased on-line through the NSPS web site, starting Dec 1. Note that pre-registration is required. No one will be admitted to the show without a ticket. To buy tickets, or for more information please visit www.nsps.ca.

Sponsors

We have always had very generous sponsors for the Challenge. This year, sponsor organizations will be setting up in breakout rooms and you will have an opportunity to visit them before the program and during the intermission. Virtually in breakout rooms, but physically in their own camera stores and other locations, vendors will be able to demonstrate any cutting-edge item you care to see. There will be several draws during the evening for door prizes donated by our sponsors.

Socializing

We will also have many breakout rooms set up for socializing with other photographers in attendance. You can choose the breakout rooms you want to visit, either for an intimate chat or a (virtual) group hug, to view and vote for the People’s Choice, or to check out Sponsors displays.

Club Challenge Representatives

Please email this information to your membership and make an announcement at your club meetings. Also, please remind your members that they can compete as individuals as well.

We look forward to seeing you and your images at the Challenge.
